Equality and solidarity: Moldova’s European Left Party takes part in march against violence against women

Representatives of the European Left Party took part in the March of Solidarity, held yesterday, March 8, in Chisinau, Moldova.
This year, the main message of the march was the call for ratification of the Istanbul Convention.

The Convention is the first legal document providing a unified approach to the prevention, investigation and punishment of acts of violence against women, including domestic violence.

Statement by the European Left Party of Moldova joining the Global Women’s Strike 2020

The European Left Party of Moldova announces its adherence to the international initiative to hold a Global Women’s Strike on March 8, 2020!

We fully share the goals and objectives of this action.

2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the women’s rights commitments made in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women, known as the Beijing Platform for Action. Unfortunately, it must be recognized that the promises made by governments 25 years ago to promote equality, development and peace for all women have not been fulfilled.

Like all participants in the Global Strike who have joined the joint Statement, the European Left Party of Moldova declares:

“We want alternative development models that should focus on people and the planet, on protecting human rights, food sovereignty and climate justice. We want a decent job and a living wage for all women. We want unpaid care work to be fairly recognized, reduced, and redistributed. We want an end to gender-based violence. We want corporate violence to stop. We demand access to resources, power and opportunity. We demand that our voices be heard and protected. We want systemic changes, and we want them now!

“Throughout history, a strike has been a way to combine the forces of various movements to bring about change. International Women’s Day is not a marketing campaign to make women feel beautiful. This is the day when women rose up and protested, when they demanded that their rights be respected and put their lives on the line to achieve these rights.

Let us pay tribute to this history and revive this day and the collective power of women to exercise their rights.”

The European Left Party of Moldova supports the idea of holding a March of Solidarity on March 8 in the center of Chisinau, demanding that the Parliament immediately ratify the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. We urge all our supporters to join the upcoming peaceful protest march.
