May Day message from Solidarity with Ukraine Antifascists Committee

This year the celebration of May Day is virtually outlawed in Ukraine. Fascist gangs and police are tearing red flags out of the hands of elders who fought 70 years ago against fascism. Anyone who distributes a leaflet for socialism or talks about workers’ revolution faces 5-10 years in prison.

Last year, in the multicultural city of Odessa, Ukraine, there was a wonderful May Day march against the U.S.-backed regime that came to power in coup. The next day, May 2, 2014, neo-Nazi gangs supported by the government flooded Odessa and massacred at least 48 anti-fascists and trade unionists.

Today, the U.S. military is training some of these same fascists to carry out Ukraine’s brutal war against the independent People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Washington wants to destroy the anti-fascist resistance in Ukraine and aim NATO bases at the heart of Russia. It is willing to work with any fascist, white supremacist scum to achieve this goal.

Today we honor the victims of racism, fascism and imperialism, from Odessa to Baltimore. It may seem they are worlds apart. But in both places, the people are resisting a common enemy: U.S. imperialism. The same military hardware being used by police against Black and Brown youth in cities like Baltimore, Ferguson and New York is also being shipped by the Pentagon to Ukraine to use against the people there.

We need a war against racism, poverty and police terror at home, not a new cold war against Russia! We need money for jobs, schools and housing, not billions of dollars to arm the heirs of Hitler in Ukraine!
