Moscow protest slams Latvian fascist march

March 16: A picket was held in front of the Latvian Embassy in Moscow to protest the Nazi Legionnaires procession in Riga. The action was attended by supporters of the United Communist Party (OCP), the Left Front, RotFront, Russian Communist Workers Party (RKRP) and others.

The amount of protesters who came out for the event far exceeded expectations. The picket turned into a small rally. Speakers from the United Communist Party included Sergey Seregin, Daria Mitin and Dennis Sommer.

Activists held many posters and banners with slogans, including: “No to fascism, no to capitalism,” “Tribunal for the SS Legion,” “Stop fascism in Latvia,” “Legionnaires, remember Kurtengoff,” “For communism, against Nazism,” “Give the world the commune,” etc.

At the end of the action, police arrested the applicant for the activity, Sergey Chekrygin, for exceeding the stated number of pickets. Protesters tried to free Sergei from the police, resulting in two more being detained — Victor Kalashin, a member of OKP, and Dmitry Grobovenko, a member of the RKRP.

The detainees were taken to the police station in the Basmanny district. Sergei Chekrygin was charged with violating the protocol of the rules of a protest, while the other two were charged with disorderly conduct.
